Anna Zimmermann

ECHOS

11.04.2026 – 09.08.2026

An ECHO is both a response and a memory, an interplay of sound and space. Even Anna Zimmermann’s sculptures do not stand in isolation. They resonate – with their surroundings, with the light, and with us as viewers. The forms seem familiar, yet elude any clear classification. Are they flowers or corals, unknown, perhaps extraterrestrial life forms? Are they friendly or unwelcoming, protective or dangerous? Microscopic images or cityscapes? Are we the observers, or are we being observed?

Some of her sculptures – these enclosed, iridescent forms without openings – seem almost eerie in their perfection. They take nothing in, they give nothing away; they stand on their own. And yet they move us, because there is something very human about them. They evoke images of people who are protecting themselves, who are completely at one with themselves, and who radiate a special beauty, a vulnerable dignity.

Schutzräume (Safe Spaces) – circles of glass whose coloured shadows trace yet another circle – are linked to this theme. Other works carry a certain morbid quality, an echo of transience, of memory, and perhaps also of comfort. As with everything in Zimmermann’s art, contrasts are always at play: life and death, closeness and distance, light and darkness.

But: it is not about defining or fixing things. The artist invites us to observe with an open mind. For, like a book that is read differently at different times, the works constantly reveal new meanings; they change the moment one approaches them.
