Anna Zimmermann

An ECHO is at once a response and a memory, an interplay of sound and space. Anna Zimmermann’s sculptures likewise do not stand in isolation. They enter into resonance—with their surroundings, with light and with us as viewers.
The forms seem familiar, yet resist any unambiguous identification. Are they blossoms or corals, unknown or perhaps extraterrestrial life forms? Are they friendly or forbidding, protective or dangerous? Microscopic images or views of cities? Are we looking at them, or are they looking at us?
Some of her sculptures—self-contained, iridescent beings without openings—appear almost uncanny in their perfection. They absorb nothing and release nothing; they exist entirely unto themselves. And yet they affect us because there is something deeply human about them. They recall people who shield themselves from the outside world, who are entirely self-contained and radiate a singular beauty, a vulnerable dignity.
Protective Spaces, circles of glass whose coloured shadows trace a further circle, extend this theme. Other works possess a morbid quality, an echo of transience and memory, perhaps also of consolation. As always in Zimmermann’s art, opposites continually resonate: life and death, proximity and distance, light and darkness.
Yet the point is not to name or define. The artist invites us to look with an open mind. Like a book that reads differently at different moments in our lives, the works continually reveal new meanings; they change as soon as we approach them.
